Suprasegmentals: Intonation part 2

  • Many English expressions or words take on different meanings or connotations depending on how they are said.
  • Practice these differences by thinking of different settings and emotions and then saying the following expressions in five different ways.









  • Suggestions for settings and context:

    a celebration (holiday) a polite meeting an interview
    Monday morning in the office shopping check-out ironic
    talking to a baby a long-lost friend nervous
    a romantic setting condescending an exam

    Expressions to say with five different intonations:

    Hello. Do we have to speak in English, teacher?
    How are you? I don’t like that
    I'm fine, thanks. I never watch TV.
    Goodbye. Everything was different
    Farewell Did everyone do that
