Canada Day....

A five-day tour in three provinces of Canada was indeed a successful challenge for the seven of us. We ended it by celebrating Canada Day at the Banff. The seven of us decided to wear this red jersey Canada shirt that we bought at the Jasper National Park. The Canadians were very happy to see us wearing the said jersey knowing that we are Filipinos. Even though we are Filipinos we are proud that the government of Canada adopted us as their residents.

A good experience I had in LINC Home Study

All of us are lucky enough to be here in Canada. We were even luckier because the government itself helps us to find jobs to communicate with other people and to settle here.

When I arrived here in Canada I was confident that I could survive living here. I thought I had a good knowledge of English, especially in communication. But when I took the Canadian Language Benchmark test, I was frustrated with my marks. I only got level 6. When the facilitator explained to me the result and told me about LINC Home Study, I was delighted. Because I cannot just give up my job just to study English. As a single mom, it was a very good relief for me that I could improve my English while working.

I am one of the students in LINC Home Study right now. It is focused on learning English in speaking, writing, listening and reading. Right now, I'm in Module 6. Even though I have just started the said module, I have learned lots of rules in English that I hadn't learned when I was in the university back home.

One of the lessons I learned that I treasure was about the serious errors that a person can commit in writing a sentence. It was funny to recall how I learned about it. There was a time that my LINC Home Study teacher sent back my activity with a note on it saying “R.O.S.” I was so confused on how to revise my activity. I searched in google.com and even in yahoo.com to find an answer but I was not lucky enough to find it. So, I made a note to ask him when I chatted with him the following Monday. My teacher told me about its meaning. He was so generous to give me a list of other serious errors in writing a sentence. I wanted to share with you the lesson I've learned from him. He told me that the three serious errors in writing a sentence in English are the following.
 Sentence-level errors: (SERIOUS)
1. ROS - Run-on Sentence
e.g. Tom went to work his wife went to school yesterday they had ice cream together.
Correct: Tom went to work. His wife went to school. They had ice cream together.

2. CS - Comma Splice
e.g. Tom went to work, his wife went to school, yesterday, they had ice cream together.
Correct: Tom went to work. His wife went to school. They had ice cream together.

3. FRAG - Fragment
e.g. Went to work. His wife school. While they had ice cream together.
Went to work. His wife school. They had ice cream together.

I was able to used the rules I've learned in this Module last week. I received a mail from the CRA telling me that my account was selected for a review. One of the pieces of information needed was about my residency for the past 2 years to present. Since I moved three times, I needed to make phone calls and even send a letter to my previous and present landlords. I was thankful to LINC Home Study because it helps me gain a little more confidence than I had before in making phone calls and even writing a letter.
