A good experience I had in LINC Home Study

All of us are lucky enough to be here in Canada. Even more luckier because the government itself helps us to find job, to communicate with other people and to settle here.

When I arrived here in Canada I was confident that I can survive living in here. I though I had a good knowledge about English especially in communication. But when I took the Canadian Language Benchmark I was frustrated with my mark. I only got level 6. When the facilitator explained to me the result and told me about the LINC Home Study I was delighted. Because I cannot just give up my job to study English knowing that I am a single mom. It was a very good relief for me that I can improve my English while I'm working.

I am one of the student in LINC Home Study right now. It is focus on learning English in speaking, writing, listening and reading. Right now I'm in Module 6. Even if I just started the said module I learned lots of rules in English that I haven't learned when I was in the university back home.

One of the lesson I learned that I can treasure as of now was about the serious error that a person can commit in writing a sentence. It was funny to recall how I learned about it. There was a time that my teacher sent back my activity with a note on it saying R.O.S. I was so confused on how to revise my activity. I've searched in google.com and even in yahoo.com to find an answer but I was not lucky enough to find it. So, I noted it on my notebook as an assignment to find out the meaning of it when I chat at him the following Monday. My teacher told me about the meaning of it. He was so generous to gave me the other serious errors in writing a sentence. I wanted to share with you the lesson I've learned from him. He told me that the three serious error in writing sentence in English were the following.

Sentence-level errors: (SERIOUS)
1. ROS - Run on Sentence
e.g. Tom went to work his wife went to school yesterday they had ice cream together.
Correct: Tom went to work. His wife went to school. They had ice cream together.

2. CS - Comma Splice
e.g. Tom went to work, his wife went to school, yesterday, they had ice cream together.
Correct: Tom went to work. His wife went to school. They had ice cream together.

3. FRAG - Fragment
e.g. Went to work. His wife school. While they had ice cream together.
Went to work. His wife school. While they had ice cream together.

I was able to used the rules I've learned in this Module last week. I received a mail from the CRA telling me that my account was selected for a review. One of the needed information was about my residency for the past 2 years to present. Since I moved three times, I need to make phone calls and even send a letter to my previous and present landlords. I was thankful to the LINC Home Study because it helps me gained a little more confidence than I had before in making phone calls and even writing a letter.

SUMMER HOLIDAYS

All of us are working hard to sustain our daily needs and to support our family. Working hard is not easy by definition. It gives you lots of stress. I think we need a time out sometimes from our jobs. Summer is coming and it is a nice season to pamper ourselves and get out from work. My family will be having our summer holiday this coming June 28 to July 3. We plan to visit lots of places. We hope that time and weather will cooperate with us so that we can visit all the places we wish to visit. Our itinerary is as follows:

  •          June 28 - leave Saskatoon at 5:00 in the morning heading to Drumheller, Alberta, and plan to have dinner there. After that we will travel straight to Calgary and stay there overnight.  We plan to visit there zoo, tower, fort and Callaway park.

  •           June 29 - we will be heading to Sicamous, British Columbia. We will be staying there for 3 nights with my friend's aunt. We will have a chance to see the beautiful tourist attraction of this place. They said that you can see beautiful house boats in Sicamous. Hopefully, we can afford to rent one because it is expensive. We plan to rent one just to gain experience about having a house boat. Also we are planning to visit some beautiful attractions there.

  •           July 2 - we will be heading home but we will spend overnight at Banff, Alberta. We plan to visit there Banff Gondola, Lake Louise, Kicking Horse Sightseeing Gondola & Grizzly Bear Refuge and the Glacier adventure.

  •           June 3- heading back home Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.

There will be ten of us who are going on the said holiday adventure. We will use our own cars. There will be two cars and each car will have a maximum of five passengers. We just hope that the kids will cooperate with us specially in travelling since it is a very long drive for them. But we will see to it that they will be entertained with their gadgets while we are travelling. We are very excited about this trip. We are starting our countdown on Saturday because it is June already.

How about you guys what's your plan this coming Summer? Do you have plans the same as my family have?  Maybe it's more different than what we have planned?  It is more exciting and challenging. Hope all of us will have a very good summer this year.
